How One Question Builds Connection

Every week, I look forward to a small but powerful gift in my inbox: a relationship and parenting tip from Tali Peleg, a marriage and parenting counselor. This week’s gem? A simple question to ask your partner: “Is there something you need from me today?”

It's a reminder how small moments of care can transform a relationship.

I’ll be translating and sharing it below—with permission from Tali—because it’s too good to keep to myself. And if you read Hebrew, you can sign to her newsletter right here.

In their book, The Love Prescription, the Gutman couple recommends that partners ask each other:Is there something you need from me today?

This simple question holds many advantages:

  • It shifts the focus from what I receive to what I give.

  • It encourages a move from passivity to proactivity.

  • It strengthens the sense of equality in effort and care.

  • It allows for clear communication instead of guessing or trying to read minds.

  • It expresses a genuine desire to be there for your partner.

  • It creates a sense of hope that there is someone to talk to.

  • It helps ease feelings of loneliness.

Because sometimes, the best way to strengthen a relationship is simply to ask and listen.
